Loft Conversions – How Other DIY Work Can reduce The Value Of Your Home
A report from the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors claims that homeowners DIY work can reduce, rather than inflate, the value of a property.
When looking to sell their house many homeowners decide that some Do-It-Yourself, no matter what it is, is bound to add value to their property. Wrong.
In September 2006, the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) said that home ‘improvements’ such as installing wooden flooring, new carpeting and other aesthetic features are not only a waste of time but also of money.
The RCIS believe that, in many cases, homeowners who follow the home improvement trends made popular by day-time TV, are actually reducing the value of their homes because, quite simply, what may be the height of decorating heaven and good taste to the householder may actually be a huge turn-off for potential buyers.
But the good news for homeowners and users of this site is that the RCIS say that a sure fire way of adding substantially to the value of a property is by building a loft conversion.
Although cosmetic Do-It-Yourself work can reduce the value of a home adding a loft conversion will have the opposite effect and boost the asking price.
Elsewhere on this website we have explained how a loft conversion can add value to your home and the warning from the RCIS, that some DIY work can adversely effect the selling price of a property, certainly backs up all the other evidence presented here.
A loft conversion can not only solve the space problem in your home or add a touch of luxury but, unlike other DIY work which is simply cosmetic, will add significantly to the value of your house.
