Upgrading doors to fire doors
by: Teresa

I've heard that there is a company (Envirograf) who can upgrade ordinary doors (ie hollow timber-framed) to fire doors.

Is this a viable option and is it cost-effective compared to buying new doors?

Ruth,

this is not a scam but as a result of changes to the Building Regulations introduced in 2007.

If the route from the loft passes rooms that are habitable, the route shall comprise fire resisting construction and all doors are to be FD 20 rating with self closures.

It is nice to see a designer including this as a number of people are falling foul of this and are having to fit FD 20 doors in order to satisfy Part B of the Building Regulations.
