Loft Storage Solutions

A loft storage conversion is an easy and low cost method of making full use of the formerly wasted space in your roof.

For the purposes of this site a loft conversion is given to mean a permanent habitable room be it a new bedroom, bathroom, office, play-room for the kids or that long dreamed of hobby room or studio.

However, even without going to the work and expense of a full conversion the loft can still be very effectively utalised as an extra storage space.

Some loft storage solutions won’t require building regulations approval but most will.

And, except for very light storage, you will have to put in a new floor and joists.

The existing joists in your loft won’t be sufficient to bear loads.

The good news is that a loft conversion as a basic storage solution can often be done in just a day or two and there are some specialist loft conversion companies who will, for around £1000, install joists, a new hatch, lighting and a loft ladder in just 24 hours.

Doing the work yourself will see that cost tumbling.

Adding a skylight will add to the cost and isn’t really required though if you are using the space on a regular basis than a loft window should be added.

And, of course, even if your conversion project is purely a low-cost, low maintenance storage solution, you must still install automatic fire detection and ensure that all fire and electrical safety standards are followed.
