Loft Conversion Ladders

Choosing the best loft conversion ladders is essential for anyone who has decided to turn the previously unused roof space into a storage area.

Whichever type of ladder is choosen it is important that they should permit safe and secure access, and be sturdy enough to hold the person climbing them and any items he is carrying.

Loft ladders are manufactured out of a variety of materials, most particularly aluminium or wood.

Before even considering buying one of these ladders certain matters need to be taken into account, particularly the amount of space available for it to be stored and how much room will it take up when it is in use.

There are three basic types of loft conversion ladders. The sliding loft ladder, which comes both in wood and aluminium, needs to be stored in the loft.

So it may not be ideal where loft space is limited. In such circumstances a folding loft ladder may be better an option.

Also available in wood or aluminium, these ladders fold into sections so will not need as much storage space in the loft.

Where space is very tight a concertina loft ladder is ideal. These fold up into a very small space within the hatch.

If someone has a large landing a fixed loft staircase may be an option. Here the loft stairs do not have to be folded up, but remain a permanent fixture.

Generally fixed loft stairs are constructed out of wood and may include handrails for added safety.

If the space permits only a narrow fixed loft stair then alternate tread stairs may be installed.

As well as being narrow this type of stair case is steeper, so may not be ideal for carrying larger items into the loft area.

For those not keen on raising or lowering loft stairs there are electric versions. However, they are very expensive with prices reaching four figure sums.
