A Mansard Loft Conversion

The usual solution when the property to be converted has a London, or butterfly, roof. A Mansard conversion involves replacing the London roof structure with steeply pitched slopes and a flat crown.

The new steep pitched roof slope can be applied to either the front or rear of the property or to both. Replacing the roof in this way will of course require the householder to obtain planning permission.

Planners will specify the degree of pitch which is acceptable to them with 70 degrees being the usual acceptable standard. The degree of pitch on a typical London roof can be as little as 20 degrees so it is easy to understand how radically the existing roof will be altered and why planning permission approval is needed.

Although primarily used in the conversion of buildings with London roofs this style of loft conversion can also be a solution to the problems faced when trying to convert any property with a very shallow pitch to its existing roof.

loft conversion ebook Similar to a box dormer in the way it increases the roof space available to be converted, a Mansard conversion is more aesthetically pleasing as it can incorporate windows which, because of the new pitch of the roof, take on the appearance of small dormers.

This aspect of a Mansard conversion appeals to planners who are usually sympathetic when considering this type of structure when an application for planning permission is made.

As with box dormers, Mansard conversions are often made to the rear of the property and, in the case of terraces, are usually built with gable ends extending up to the party parapet and along the new steeper slope of the roof.

To maximise light within the roof space dormer style vertical windows can be installed. This is often the preferred style of window though flush fitting roof-lights can also be used successfully.
