Finishing a loft ceiling
by: Richard

I have recently undertaken a loft conversion and the building inspector required not only the 100mm insulation between the rafters but also a 50mm insulated plasterboard to be fitted to the underside of the rafters. This is apparently to avoid cold spots. The result is a very comfortable loft room which, if the blinds are down, stays cool in summer and is never cold in the winter assuming general central heating is working.

The biggest problem with loft work is ensuring adequate ventilation of the cavity to avoid moisture build-up.

It is worth modelling your roof thermally to verify if you require a breathable membrane or not.

This isn't an expensive step as a number of insulation companies offer this check as a free service.

Yours sincerely,
