This is an interesting question. Simply put, screwing 2"x2" battens is not going to really strengthen the joists, even if you installed them across like you have stated.

All the weight will rest on joists in either case.

Our advice would be to install new 6"x2" joists that would run alongside the existing joists from wall plate to load bearing wall then cut leaving 2' overhang on both sides.
